ENT to Participate in Project DIGIPHY

Ericsson Nikola Tesla will participate in the DIGIPHY project. The goal of the project is to research and design technologies that enable immersive and intuitive extended reality (XR) inter-personal communication and interaction, as well as the remote presence and interaction of persons and objects in the visual representation of a dynamically updated digital twin, spatially and temporally synchronized with a physical smart space (equipped with sensors and actuators).

Prototype XR applications will be developed for two case studies, to be tested and validated in a 5G network in the laboratory prototype. DIGIPHY will result in publications, industrial partners’ product innovations, further collaboration between industrial and academic partners through future projects, and extending this collaboration through internationalization.

The project should research and design methods for synchronizing the digital twin with the physical world, utilizing stationary and mobile sensors, and refreshing the visual representation of the digital twin in real time. It should also research methods of intuitive digital-physical interaction and establish criteria for assessing their Quality of Experience (QoE), with an emphasis on immersion and remote presence.

One of the goals is to innovate research integration mechanisms and network aspects of data transmission between the physical and digital worlds, as well as efficient distributed processing at the network edge, and to validate DIGIPHY technologies by using lab prototypes for two case studies in a 5G environment. The participants should also ensure that ethical principles and privacy rules are built into the technology design.

The project is co-financed by the EU with€1.5 million and will finish by the end of June 2026. The partners that joined forces are the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, Diversitas IT Sustavi – Delta Reality, and Ericsson Nikola Tesla. The project is implemented at Inventorium, a scientific and research laboratory at ENT opened in cooperation with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in June this year.

Ericsson Nikola Tesla has a strong research and development component built into the company’s foundations, so with a strong R&D center that works closely with Ericsson’s global R&D community, the ENT Research department conducts research and development projects independently or in cooperation with partners and fosters strong partnership with universities on various projects, including projects co-financed by the EU. DIGIPHY is the latest project with which we continue this long-standing successful tradition of bringing the latest technological innovations to the Croatian research and development, academic, industrial, social, and economic spheres.
